The fleet commanded by the hersir Hjalmar had become a pack of wolves thirsting for glory, constantly scanning the horizon for the familiar silhouette of a village to devastate, a booty to seize, lives to claim. Every river became a vein to exploit, every shore a treasure to discover. The warriors’ eyes were like eagles: they scrutinized every detail of the landscape, every movement in the bushes. They were living a fantastical era, multiplying the strandhöggs and reveling in these raids that encountered almost no real resistance.

What joy it was to spread death in enemy territory! What pleasure in claiming riches and making use of them!

As twilight descended upon the river and enveloped the world in a dark velvet cloak, the warriors feasted. Their military campaign was so effortless that they didn’t even need to take advantage of the darkness to launch attacks. On the contrary, they eagerly awaited the night to exchange tales of the day’s battles, descriptions of the routed enemies, and details of the plunder gathered. Their joyful piracy soared in ecstatic columns to the sky, to the great delight of Odin, Thor, and all the others. Indeed, this expedition was blessed by the divine.

At dawn, the drakkar resumed its course, sliding deeper into the labyrinth of rivers. The crew, their energy renewed by sleep and excitement, continued their ceaseless quest for treasure and glory. Days passed, each bringing its share of challenges and discoveries. Villages were plundered, treasures amassed, lives taken. The river, a silent witness to these acts, continued to flow, carrying the blood of the vanquished, spreading the cries of war and the songs of victory. Thus, the Vikings continued toward new conquests, toward unknown lands. These armed men from the North, unperturbed, kept sailing upstream, always in search of villages to pillage, spoils to bring back, people to kill.

Like a terrifying specter, the rumor of their arrival had traversed the hills and valleys, the plains and forests. It had been whispered into every attentive ear. Tales of the Nordic horde and its indiscriminate slaughter were recounted for miles around. The insidious whisper had seeped into every corner of the lands, revealing the grim tableau of these odious Vikings’ past exploits that made those unfortunate enough to cross their path tremble with fear.
